Endurance testing

At the Kisakallio campus, endurance testing is most commonly carried out for individuals and groups using a cycle ergometer test, which utilizes an indirect measurement of maximal oxygen uptake (VOâ‚‚max). For more precise training guidance and long-term performance monitoring, lactate threshold assessments can be incorporated into the test. The test is suitable for athletes, competitive fitness enthusiasts, and recreational exercisers alike. It provides valuable information on aerobic fitness, maximal oxygen uptake, and individual heart rate training zones, helping to optimize endurance training and monitor progress over time. We also conduct various field-based endurance tests, including shuttle run tests such as the Beep Test (PIIP Test) and the Yo-Yo Test. Testing services are provided by experienced specialists Mika Valavuori and exercise physiologist Bettina Wikström.

Contact us, and we will help you select the test that best matches your goals and needs!

Strength and speed testing

In our strength and speed testing services, we utilize the latest technology, including the Photon Sports system and the FITLIGHT Training system

Our testing packages may include:

  • Strength testing (maximal strength, explosive strength, and muscular endurance)

  • Jump testing (using a photocell mat, force plates, or the Photon Sports system)

  • Force–velocity profiling

  • Power output measurements in barbell exercises

  • Speed and change-of-direction tests using photocells or the Photon Sports system

  • Reaction time and agility testing using FITLIGHT or a photocells

The Photon Sports system enables fast and accurate performance analysis, including the measurement of acceleration, deceleration, and change-of-direction ability. The FITLIGHT system provides an engaging and versatile way to assess reaction time, agility, and decision-making speed. Strength and speed testing services are provided by Aki-Matti Alanen, PhD in Kinesiology, experienced testing specialist Mika Valavuori, and exercise physiologist Bettina Wikström.

Team sport performance testing

Kisakallio has a long tradition of testing physical performance characteristics in team sports. We help clubs and teams build the most practical and relevant testing package from our wide range of assessment options. The price of a testing package depends on the selected tests and team size. Team sport testing is conducted by Mika Valavuori, Aki-Matti Alanen, Bettina Wikström, and/or our sports and exercise students.

We utilize a comprehensive range of testing technologies to accurately assess different aspects of athletic performance. Testing services can be carried out at the Kisakallio campus or delivered as an off-site service in a team's or club's own training environment.

Movement control and mobility assessment

An athlete's movement control, mobility, and muscular balance can be evaluated through functional testing. We conduct internationally recognized assessments, including: Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y-Balance Test These assessments help identify movement restrictions, mobility limitations, and muscular imbalances that may increase the risk of injury or limit athletic performance. The results provide valuable information for individualized training and rehabilitation planning. Functional testing is led by Aki-Matti Alanen, PhD in Kinesiology.

Health fitness assessments

We offer a wide range of fitness assessments for physically active individuals, recreational exercisers and fitness enthusiast. All testing is carried out by experienced specialists. Following the assessment, you will receive clear feedback and practical recommendations to support your training and fitness goals. Health and fitness assessments are supervised by experienced testing specialist Mika Valavuori and exercise physiologist Bettina Wikström.

Cycle ergometer test

Cycle ergometer test for assessing endurance fitness and heart health

  • A submaximal or maximal endurance fitness test in which the participant pedals a cycle ergometer while the workload is increased gradually in stages.
  • The test provides a reliable assessment of maximal oxygen uptake (VOâ‚‚max), an important indicator of aerobic fitness and cardiovascular performance.
  • In a submaximal cycle ergometer test, endurance fitness can be evaluated without requiring maximal physical exertion.
  • The test is particularly well suited for athletes, recreational exercisers, working-age adults, and individuals with lower levels of physical activity.

To ensure testing safety, any health-related risk factors must be disclosed to the testing staff at the time of booking, or prior to the test in the event of acute symptoms. These include cardiovascular, respiratory, or metabolic diseases or symptoms, acute infections, and risk factors associated with coronary artery disease.

6-Minute Walk Test

The UKK Institute Walking Test for assessing endurance fitness

The UKK 6-Minute Walking Test is an easy-to-administer fitness assessment designed to measure endurance fitness in adults.

The test provides an estimate of maximal oxygen uptake (VOâ‚‚max), making it a reliable method for assessing an adult's aerobic fitness and overall endurance capacity.

Tests:

  • Shoulder Mobility Test: Assesses shoulder range of motion and identifies potential functional limitations in the shoulder girdle.
  • Lateral Trunk Flexion Test: Evaluates side-bending mobility of the lower back and trunk, helping to identify restrictions in spinal and torso movement.
  • Duration: approximately 2–4 minutes per participant
  • Where and how the tests are conducted? At the Kisakallio campus or as an off-site service for groups and organizations.
  • What participants receives:
    • Personal feedback on test results
    • Identification of potential mobility limitations

Grip strength test

Hand grip strength test indicates muscle strength and overall physical function

"Hand grip strength is one of the best single indicators of overall fitness, muscle strength, and even long-term health outcomes—and it takes only 10 seconds to measure."

Benefits

  • A simple way to assess physical function. Scientifically validated and widely used in occupational health care and health assessments, hand grip strength provides valuable insight into overall physical capability.
  • Quick, easy, and cost-effective. The measurement is fast, effortless to perform, and easy to arrange for both individuals and groups.
  • An excellent addition to wellness events. The test works well as a standalone assessment or as part of a broader health evaluation package, for example alongside an InBody body composition analysis.
  • Supports preventive health care. Low hand grip strength may be an early indicator of reduced physical fitness or underlying health concerns, even before the individual notices any symptoms themselves.

The hand grip strength test is included in the Body Fitness Index assessment package, offering a fast and easy way to gain valuable insights into your physical fitness—without breaking a sweat. Read more under "Body Fitness Index!
